Dangers of Marketing to school kids

Date posted: 09 Jan 2012
Everywhere I go, I see Coles posters encouraging parents and students to bring in their Coles dockets to earn sporting equipment for their school. I was standing in a school office last week and heard the receptionist say demandingly to a young child, “Have you got your Coles vouchers?”
Woolworths runs a similar ‘Earn and Learn’ marketing campaign. An Australian politician has publicly blasted the programs saying, "Coles and Woolworths are businesses ruthlessly involved in the pursuit of market share. This is a cheap, cynical way for the retail giants to get their brands into the minds of impressionable students."
The politician is calling for federal funding to be withdrawn from schools that allow retail companies to promote their products to students. “Schools should be places dedicated to education,”=BR> he said.
