Having books in the home, reading aloud to children, role modelling and encouraging reading can benefit in many areas of a child’s development. Yet many parents struggle with this as it was not part of their own childhood.
Each Tuesday Dr Belinda George, a Principal at Homer Drive Elementary in Texas gets into her pyjamas and reads a children’s book livestreaming it on facebook for her students. She says “the bottom line is I love, love kids,” said George, adding she does not have any of her own. “I know if I don’t reach them outside of school I never reach them in school.”
Is this something your Principal, Librarian or possibly a team of teachers could take on to connect with your students and their families?
